The SBC Project – A Never Ending Story

The Soundtrack for Big Cities project took off more than one week ago and it was incredible to observe our readers enthusiasm in suggesting more and more tunes for big or small, real or imagined cities. The virtual limits of the large cities we first foresaw expanded to whole regions but also focused in small towns with great sentimental or historical value.

ARKollective is extremely thankful for the precious contributions and time dedicated by our followers.

Like in the engravings of the renaissance picturing whole cities from afar and where certain buildings, such as churches or palaces, were distorted and enlarged due to its objective and subjective importance’s, we could perceive that our spontaneous collaborators were making the range of music selections escape towards more personal and intimate directions. Which is only natural for we, as individuals, are always the vortex in the city’s universe.

Mostly through social media, text messaging or direct adding on Spotify, the original 13 song playlist turned out into more than 90.

With all five continents covered and without extreme control over the proposed content, ARKollective assumed the city’s complexity and contradictory nature and the song list became the mirror of a beautiful Babel. This musical exquisite corpse is full of classics and modern tunes, from folklore songs to progressive rock and jazz.

The contrasting effect of different styles and musical approaches is simultaneously disturbing and engaging. One never knows what comes next… with good and bad surprises, just like when you turn the corner on a city block.

With so many places missing, the last music added to this ‘’Original Soundtrack’’ for any place in the world was ”On the Road to Nowhere” by the Talking Heads, leaving the door always open for this permanent work in progress. So, be our guest and keep on adding the echoes of our great cities!!
